“The rich man also died and was buried.” — Luke 16:22 (NIV) According to Forbes, thirty-one billionaires died in 2024, leaving behind a combined $207 billion. Isak Andic, founder of a global fashion empire, was among them—he fell while hiking with his son at age 71.

Throughout history, the pursuit of wealth has been a central concern in both religious and economic thought. The Bible addresses prosperity and morality in different ways, as seen in Proverbs 11:10 and 2 Peter 2:3. These verses highlight the contrast between righteous and corrupt wealth, echoing themes found in capitalism’s evolution.

In 1925, Mahatma Gandhi published a list of Seven Social Sins. They are a stark moral warning about behaviors that corrode society from within: Wealth without Work, Pleasure without Conscience, Knowledge without Character, Commerce without Morality, Science without Humanity, Religion without Sacrifice, and Politics without Principle.

“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.” — Proverbs 3:9–10. This Proverb offers practical wisdom for how believers can approach financial decisions with a heart of worship.

Many of us suffer from a “scarcity” mindset in which we believe that life is a finite pie and if one person takes a big piece, there will be less for everyone. Counter to this is an “abundance” mindset in which there is plenty available for everyone.
